Lymphatic system Flashcards
Lymph capillaries are found in
Tissue Spaces
What are the Primary lymphatic structures?
- Thymus
- Red Bone Marrow
What are the Secondary lymphatic structures?
- Lymph Nodes
- Tonsils
- Spleen
- MALT
The Red Bone Marrow is the site of
- hematopoiesis
- B-Cell Maturation
The Thymus is the site of
T-Cell Maturation
What is the function of the lymph nodes?
- Cleansing lymph
- Immune system activation
How do lymph nodes cleanse lymph?
They act as filters with their macrophages removing and destroying any foreign objects
How do lymph nodes activate the immune system?
They allow for lymphocytes to become activated and attack against antigens
Tonsils are the simplest of the lymphoid organs and
Form a ring of lymphatic tissue around pharynx
What is the function of the tonsils?
To gather and remove pathogens in food or air
The tonsils have tonsillar crypts which are formed when
Overlying epithelium invaginates
What is the function of the tonsillar crypts?
They trap and destroy whatever bacteria or pathogen enters
The Spleen is the site of
Lymphocyte proliferation and immune surveillance and response
What is the function of the Spleen?
It cleanses blood of aged blood cells and platelets
How does the Spleen clean blood?
It does so via macrophages
