02/24 Flashcards
What is the function of lymph nodes?
- Cleansing lymph
- Immune system activation
Lymph nodes house
- T cells + B cells
- Macrophages
- Dendritic cells
How do lymph nodes clean lymph?
The macrophages of the nodes cleanse lymph before it makes it to cardiovascular system
Macrophages get rid of
Pathogens, virus, or cancerous cells
What is the function of there being multiple afferent vessels into a lymph node?
The multiple inflows allow for an increase in fluid pressure, ensuring that lymph is forced out of the node
Lymph nodes are often found in
Clusters in different parts of the body
What is the function of the tonsils?
They gather and remove pathogens in food or air
Tonsils form a ring of tissue around the
Pharynx
What is the largest of lymphatic origins?
The Spleen
RBCs and about 30% platelets are stored in the
Spleen
Lymphocytes proliferate (multiply) in the
Spleen
What is the function of the Spleen?
It filters blood and has macrophages which will phagocytize pathogens
What is the MALT?
Lymphoid tissue found in part of mucous membrane lining respiratory, genital, and urinary tracts
What are viruses?
Little packets of RNA or DNA that are obligate intracellular parasites
Mold and yeast are types of
Fungi
