01/27 Flashcards
What are the two types of Leukocytes?
- Granulocytes
2. Agranulocytes
What is unique about Granulocytes?
They have granules / secretory vesicles
What are the three types of Granulocytes?
- Neutrophils
- Eosinophils
- Basophils
What is the function of Neutrophils?
They kill bacteria
What is the function of Eosinophils?
They fight against parasitic worms and allergic reactions
What is the function of Basophils?
They release histamine + contain heparin
What are the two types of Agranulocytes?
Lymphocytes and Monocytes
What are examples of Lymphocytes?
- T cells
- B cells
- Natural killer cells
What is the function of Monocytes?
They take up residence in body tissues and develop into macrophages
What are marcophages?
They are cells that clean debris in body or attack pathogens
Platelets are cell fragments that
- Play a role in blood clotting
- Activate in response to tear in blood vessel
In what form do platelets circulate in the blood?
Inactive form
What happens to the platelets after they get activated?
They swell, become sticky, and release a chemical that attracts more platelets
What is Hemostasis?
The procedure which allows for fixing a blood vessel tear
What are the steps of Hemostasis?
- Vascular spasm
- Platelet Plug Formation
- Coagulation phase
What happens during Vascular spasm?
The blood vessel constricts, making the diameter smaller and reducing the amount of blood lost
What happens during Platelet Plug Formation?
Collagen fibers are exposed during the blood vessel tears
Anemia is a blood disorder in which
Blood has low O2 carrying capacity
Anemia can be due to
- Lack of RBCs
- Insufficient RBCs that don’t work properly
Sickle Cell Anemia is a blood disorder in which
RBCs change shape under low O2 conditions
What is the antigen?
The marker on the surface of the blood cell that allows for identification
What is the antibody?
Protein produced that identifies the antigens and attaches to them for destruction
Clumping happens when there is
An unsuccessful blood type match
