02/26 Flashcards
What part of the immune system is nonspecific?
Innate
The Innate Immune system contains which barriers?
- Surface barriers
- Internal barriers
What are the surface barriers found within the Innate system?
- Skin
- Mucus Membranes
- Respiratory Tract
The skin is what kind of membrane?
Cutaneous membrane
What are the two layers of skin?
Epidermis (epithelial) and Dermis (Connective)
The skin contains
- Two layers
- Sebaceous glands
- Sweat glands
Mucus membranes line
Body cavities, like oral, reproductive, GI tract, and urinary tract
Mucus membranes have embedded cells that secrete
Mucin
What are the interior barriers of the innate system?
- Cells
- Chemicals
- Physiological Responses
What are the types of cells that assist in the Innate system?
- Phagocytic Cells
- Natural Killer Cells
- Eosinophils
Phagocytic Cells are cells which
Engulf and destroy pathogens
What are the Phagocytic cells?
Neutrophils, Macrophages, Dendritic Cells
What is the function of Natural Killer Cells?
They attack other infected cells
What do Natural Killer Cells release while attacking infected cells?
Perforin, an enzyme which forms a hole in the cell-wall of the pathogen and releases other enzymes to trigger apoptosis
What happens when a cell undergoes apoptosis?
It shrivels and dies
