Liver disease pathology Flashcards
Processes of the liver
all the blood from the gut goes through the liver
liver produces bile, excreted down the bile duct into the duodenum
bile can remove some things, and produce bile salta
gallbladder stores the bile, will release into the duodenum when someone eats
jaundice and what causes it
yellowing of skin/eye sclera
too much work for liver o do
can occur in haemolyticc anaemia
splenomegaly
enlargement of the spleen
can occur in haemolytic anaemia where the RBCs are being broken down (not as sturdy)
cirrhosis
end stage of liver disease
- bands of fibrosis
many nodules on the liver
mechanisms of cirrosis
damage to liver cells - inflamamtion
regeneration can occur
but over long period of time, healing by ibrosis
causes of cirrohsis
Hepiitis viruses (not A as can revere if virus is clear) alcohol
consequences of cirhosis
liver failure
jaundice
ascites
hepatocellular cancer
side effect of cirrhosis and issues
portal hypertension
raised BP in portal syetm
asteomoses and joins can be dilated between portal and venous system
can cause bleeds of the oesophagus
why
- portal vein goes through liver
due to fibrosis, veins tortuoes and blind endins
more pressure required to move the blood through
ascites
fluid filled abdomen
due to low albumin production
blockage of bile out of the liver
can lead to bladder stones
gallbladder stones if they move into bile duct can block flow of bile into the duodenum
tumours can also block
