Lesson 5 (Part 1) Flashcards
What is the largest organ in the body?
The liver
What is the liver covered by?
Glisson’s capsule
Glisson’s capsule
Thin connective layer
Where is the Glisson’s capsule thickest?
Around the IVC
Is the liver intraperitoneal or retroperitoneal?
Intraperitoneal
- except the bare area
What does the Glisson capsule act as?
Protective layer
What region is the liver located?
Right hypocondrium
- epigastric
- left hypocondrium
- right lumbar
What is the superior border of the liver?
Diaphragm
What is the posterior border of the liver?
Lumbar region
What are the anterior borders of the liver? (2)
- Abdominal wall
2. Ribs
What is the inferior border of the liver?
Organs
What organs are inferior to the liver? (6)
- Pancreas
- Right kidney
- Duodenum
- Colon
- Gallbladder
- Lesser curvature of the stomach
What are the 2 main surfaces of the liver?
- Anterior
- parietal - Posterior/inferior
- visceral
Why is it important to know where we are in the liver? (4)
- Localize an abnormality
- F/U ultrasounds
- bigger or smaller - If there is a change in appearance
- Affects patient mangement
- eg. stop chemo
What helps us know where we are in the liver?
Landmarks
What are 3 general types of landmarks we could use in the liver?
- Fissures
- Ligaments
- Vasculature
Fissure
Is a groove, natural division, deep furrow, elongated cleft, or tear in various parts of the body
What are the 3 types of fissures?
- Main lobar fissure
- median - Right intersegmental fissure
- Left intersegmental fissure
What does the main lobar ligament do?
Divides the liver into left and right
- the intersegmental fissures
- surgically
What are the 7 liver ligaments?
- Falciform ligament
- Ligamentum teres
- Ligamentum venosum ligament
- Hepatoduodenal ligament
- Gastrohepatic ligament
- Coronary ligament
- Right and left triangular ligament
What is another word for ligamentum teres?
Round ligament
What does the gastrohepatic ligament do?
Connects the liver to the stomach
- fibrous band of tissue
What does the hepatoduodenal ligament do?
Connects the liver to the duodenum
Where is the hepatoduodenal ligament?
Surrounds the common bile duct, portal vein and the proper hepatics
What does the hepatoduodenal ligament act as?
A protective layer
