Lesson 1 (Part 2) Flashcards
Echotexture
The characteristic pattern or structure of tissue layers as seen during ultrasonic imaging
What are 2 examples of echotexture terms?
- Homogeneous
- Heterogenous
- inhomogeneous
Homogeneous
Even echogenicity throughout the structure
Inhomogeneous (heterogeneous)
Contains mixed echos in the same structure
Contour
Term used to describe the border of a structure or organ
What are 2 contour terms?
- Smooth
2. Irregular/ lobulated
Size
Rough measurements of the structure or organ
- normal range
Artifacts
Is a structure in an image which is not directly similar with the actual tissue being scanned
- can also hinder our image
What are 2 common artifacts?
- Shadowing
2. Acoustic enhancements
Shadowing
Absorb or attenuates the sound waves more rapidly
What is an example of shadowing?
Stones
Acoustic enhancement
Sound travels very fast through fluid causing brightness
What is an example of acoustic enhancements?
The gall bladder attenuates less sound than surrounding tissue
- appears darker
Attenuate
Is the reduction in amplitude of the ultrasound beam as a function of distance through the imaging medium
