Anterior ligament
Fold peritoneum goes from anterior surface of uterus to posterior surface of bladder
What does the anterior ligament form?
The anterior cul de sac
What is another term for the anterior cul de sac?
Vesicouterine pouch
What happens in the vesicouterine pouch?
Fluids gets collected
Where does the posterior ligament extend from?
From the posterior side of the uterus to the rectum
What does the posterior ligament form?
Forms a deep pouch, Pouch of Douglas (PCDS)
What are 2 other names for the pouch of douglas?
- Posterior cul de sac

What happens in the pouch of douglas?
Fluid collects here
What are the functions of the uterus if fertilization occurs? (2)
- Implants into endometrial lining and develops within the uterine tube
- Myometrial contractions at labour
What are the functions of the uterus if no fertilization occurs? (2)
- Menstration occurs
2. Myometrial contractions aide sloughing off endometrium
What is the primary blood supply to the uterus?
The internal iliac arteries
What does the uterine arteries travel within?
The broad ligament, at the cornua anastomose with ovarian artery
Where does the blood supply enter for the uterus?
Myometrium
What runs along the arteries of the uterus?

What part of the uterus is fixed?
The cervix
Where is the cervix fixed?
In the midline
What parts of the cervix is mobile? (2)
- Body
2. Fundus
Flexion
Axis of the uterine body relative to the cervix
Version
Axis of the cervix relative to the vagina
What can affect of change the position of the uterus? (2)
- Distension of the bladder
2. Rectal fullness
How is the uterus normally position?
Anteverted/anteflexed
What is the other position the uterus can be in?
Retroverted/retroflexed
Anteverted
Tilted more anterior
- relative to the vagina
Retroverted
Entire uterus is tilted backward
- relative to vagina
Retroflexed
Body is tilted posteriorly
- relative to cervix
Anteflexed
Tilted more anterior
- relative to the cervix
Parity
Pregnant
What is the size and shape of the uterus?
It varies throughout life
What are factors that can effect the size and shape of the uterus? (3)
- Age
- Hormonal status
- Parity
- pregnant
