What does the duct of wirsung do?
It dumps secretions into the duodenum via major papilla (ampula of vater)
What is another word for major papilla?
Ampula of vater
What does the duct of wirsung merge with?
The common bile duct before entering the duodenum at the amoula vater
What is the size of the duct of wirsung?
3mm or less
How is the duct of wirsung seen in the body of the pancreas?
As a linear structure in the body
- anechoic
Is the pancreas routinely imaged in an abdominal ultrasound?
Yes
What are the best positions to see the pancreas? (3)
- Supine
- most common - Right anterior oblique and left lateral decubitus
- Left coronal
What axis are you looking at when scanning the pancreas in transverse?
The long axis
What can you see of the pancreas when you are in trans view?
The whole pancreas
What can you see of the pancreas when you are in sagittal view?
Only certain parts of the pancreas at a time
How is the tail angled in the pancreas?
Angled up to the spleen
- head is more inferior and tail is more superior
What organs make it hard to see the pancreas? (3)
- Stomach
- Rib cage
- Bowel

Liver
What are 4 techniques used to help you clear the view of the pancreas?
- Drink water
- Deep breath in
- Pushing stomach out
