Lesson 4 (Part 4) Flashcards
What are 4 anomalies of the pancreas?
- Annular pancreas
- Cysts
- Agenesis
- Pancreatic divisum
Annular pancreas
A ring of pancreatic tissue that encircles the duodenum
What can annular pancreas cause?
Pancreatitis (inflammation)
What wraps around the pancreases head?
The duodenum
Cysts
A membranous sac or cavity of abnormal character containing fluid
What is associated with cystic disease?
Multiple cysts
What is another name for multiple cysts?
von Hippel-Lindau
Agenesis
Congenital absence of the body and tail
- the head is typically larger
What do you need for the pancreas to survive?
The head
What is the most common anomaly?
Pancreatic divisum
Pancreatic divisum
Lack of fusion of dorsal and ventral pancreatic buds
What does pancreatic divisum affect?
The ducts
What is the best way to look at the pancreas? (2)
- MRI
2. CT
What are 2 types of dorsal agenesis?
- Complete absence of dorsal pancreas
2. Partial absence of dorsal pancreas
What happens in 10% of patients with pancreatic ducts?
The ducts of Wirsung and Santorini fail to fuse
- most of the pancreas is then drained through the duct of Santorini and the minor papilla
What can pancreatic divisum lead to?
Pancreatitis
What is the treatment for pancreas divisum?
Sphincteroplasty of minor papilla
What is a pseudomass?
False mass
What do pseudomasses appear as?
Bulges
- extend to the right of the GDA
- anterior body where left lobe liver touches the pancreas
What does a normal pancreas have? (2)
- Same echogenicity
2. Same texture
