Lesson 1 (Part 1) Flashcards
Operator dependent
Describes how each ultrasound can be different when done by 2 different people using the same machine

How does fluid appear on an ultrasound?
Anechoic
What are 3 examples of fluids you might see in an ultrasound?
- Urine
- Water
- Blood
How does bone appear on an ultrasound?
White defined lines
What 3 examples of structures in the body that would appear anechoic on an ultrasound?
- Bile ducts
- Stomach
- Bladder
Sonographic parameters
Terms used to describe structures in ultrasound
What are 4 sonographic parameters?
- Echogenicity
- Echotexture
- Size
- Contour
Echogenicity
Ability to bounce an echo
- appears as different shades of grey
What is echogenicity used for?
To differentiate between different structures in the body
What is an example of echogenicity?
The spleen is hyperechoic compared to the liver
- the spleen appears brighter
What is the echogenicity between kidneys and the spleen?
The kidneys is hypoechoic compared to the spleen
- kidneys > liver > spleen
What are 5 echogenic terms?
- Hypoechoic
- Hyperechoic
- Isoechoic
- Anechoic
- Echogenic
Hypoechoic
Darker than surrounding tissues
Hyperechoic
Brighter than surrounding tissue
Isoechoic
Same echogenicity as surrounding tissue
Anechoic
No echoes
- appears black
Echogenic
Producing echoes
- bright
