4
Q

how is it than an injection into any synovial joint compartment of the stifle will pass through all joints of the stifle

A

b/c the joints of the stifle are all connected within a single capsule

Q

what do the blue dots depict

A

the fabellae of the femoro-fabellar joint in canines

FABELLAE = seamoid bone in proximal heads of the gastrocnemius

7
Q

what is the function of the medial and lateral meniscuses of the stifle

A

they stabilize the movement of the femoral condyles on the flat tibial condyles

Q

what ligaments support the stifle joint?

A

Patellar ligament (cranially)
medial collateral (medially)
lateral collateral (laterally)
caudal cruciate (prevents caudal slip of tibia)
cranial cruciate
meniscofemoral (stabilizes menisci)

11
Q

what happens to the lateral and cruciate ligaments as the stifle is extended

12
Q

what happens to the tibia during the flexion and extension of the stifle

13
Q

cruciate ligament tear

A
  • acute trauma: caused by sudden rotation of a flexed stifle

16
Q

what are the muscles of the cranial compartment of the stifle

A

Quadriceps femoris
- rectus femoris
- vastus medialis
- vastus lateralis
- vastus intermedius

Iliopsoas

17
Q

what 4 muscles comprise the quadriceps femoris

A

Rectus femoris (ilium)
Vastus medialis *
Vastus lateralis *
Vastus Intermedius *
* proximal femur and shaft

17
Q

what is the innervation of the quadriceps femoris

A

Femoral nerve

18
Q

what is the insertion point for the quadriceps femoris

A

Tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament(s)

19
Q

what is the action of the quadriceps femoris

A

extension of stifle
(rectus femoris also flexes hip)

20
Q

unlike the dog, horses have 3 patellar ligaments, what are they?

A

intermediate patellar ligament (pink)
lateral patellar ligament (purple)
medial patellar ligament (red)

21
Q

why are femoral nerve lesions catastrophic

A

Dysfunction of the femoral nerve paralyzes the quadriceps, resulting in the collapse of the stifle and disabling the entire limb. Compensation is not available. The skin of the medial surface of the limb is deprived of sensation.

22
Q

what muscle tendons help stabilize the stifle joint capsule (7)

A
  • lntermediate patellar lig.
  • lateral patellar lig.
  • medial patellar lig.
  • lateral collateral lig.
  • medial meniscus
  • lateral meniscus
23
Q

what are the main arteries of the hindlimb

A

External Iliac a.
Femoral a.
Deep femoral a.
Saphenous a.
Cranial branch
Caudal branch
Politeal a.
Cranial tibial a.
Dorsal pedal a.

24
Q

what are the main arteries of the hip

A

Femoral a.
Deep femoral a.
medial circumflex femoral
lateral cirucmflex femoral a.
Internal iliac a.
Caudal gluteal a.
Cranial gluteal a.

25
Q

Which three muscles of the thigh converge in the fascia of the medial side of the stifle?

A

gracilis
sartorius
semitendinosus
