Lecture 3 Flashcards
How does Mind Body dualism view the mind?
Views the mind as a spiritual entity
What does Mind Body dualism say about the mind?
the mind is not subject to the same physical laws that govern the body and therefore cannot be studied using traditional scientific methods
How does Monism view the mind?
As a product of the same physical events that effect the body
What does Monism imply about the mind?
The mind can be studies from a scientific perspective
What was the first approach to understanding human behaviour?
Structuralism
What was the idea behind structuralism?
It assumes more complex aspects of the mind could be broken down into more basic elements
What did structuralism rely on?
Analytic Introspection
What is analytic introspection?
Participants trained to systematically describe their experience when exposed to various stimuli
What is Functionalism concerned with?
The function and purpose of behaviour and thought, rather than structure
What does functionalism emphasize?
How mental processes help us rather than simply describing what they are
How does the use of different perspectives help?
they could emphasize different aspects of behaviour and mental processes
What are the different types of Perspectives?
Psychodynamic Behavioural Cognitive Biological Cross-Cultural Evolutionary Humanistic
What did the Psychodynamic perspective beleive?
Different causes of behaviour could be understood by looking within an individual
How did Behaviourism start?
With the premise that behaviour is what really matter and therefore should be the focus of research
How did behaviourism view behaviour?
As a product of the environment. It also emphasized controlling behaviour by altering the environment
What did Behaviourism lead to the development of?
Behaviour modification therapy
What does Cognitive behaviourism emphasize?
The link between behaviour and cognition. Assumes humans are thinking creatures
What does Cognitive behaviourism believe about the environment?
Humans can learn new behaviours by observing others. While the environment influences us we can also influence the environment
What does the humanistic approach emphasize?
Conscious motives, freedom, choice and self actualizing
What is Self-actualizing?
Reaching ones full potential
What is the Gestalt perspective concerned with?
How elements of experience are organized into wholes. The whole is greater than its parts
What is the cognitive perspective concerned with?
The nature of the mind and understanding how mental processes influence behaviour
What does Cognitive neuroscience rely one?
Physiological measures to understand mental processes
What does the Socio- cultural perspective focus on?
The range of socially-mediated influences on behaviour, thoughts and feelings
What does the Biological perspective focus on?
Various underlying physiology relevant for understanding human nature
Which approach is related to Localization of function?
the biological perspective
The evolutionary perspective concerned with?
How behaviour and mental processes evolved
