Lecture 11 Flashcards
Where is Audition processed?
The Temporal Lobe
How is Audition Processed?
Particular neurons are tuned to respond to specific frequencies
Where is Vision processed?
The occipital lobe
How is Vision Processed?
Particular neurons are tuned to respond to specific kind of stimulation
Where is Touch processed?
Somatic sensory cortex
What is the Association Cortex?
Areas of the cerebral cortex that have no direct motor/sensory function but are involved in the integration of neural activity with higher-level cognition
What is Language Production associated with?
Broca’s area
Motor Cortex
What does Broca’s area do?
Formulation of speech
Where is Broca’s area found?
The Frontal Lobe
What does the Motor Cortex do in relation to language?
Coordinate muscle that are involved with speech
What is Language Comprehension associated with?
Wernicke’s area
Where is Wernicke’s area found?
The Temporal Lobe
What is Neural Plasticity?
The ability of neurons to change in structure/function overtime
What could change Plasticity of neurond?
Alcohol, being raised in a more stimulating environment, reading Braille
What decreases plasticity in children?
Specialization or pruning occurs and the unused synapses deteriorate
How do the two hemispheres of the cerebral cortex cimmunicate?
Via the Corpus Callosum
What is Lateralization?
Refers to the tendency for some cognitive function to be (relatively) localized in one hemisphere
What is localized in the Left Hemisphere?
Language, logic and positive emotion
What is localized in the right hemisphere?
Spatial processing, melody perception, imagery and negative emotion
What do Split Brain patients not have?
An intact corpus callosum
What is False Dichotomy?
Trying to neatly place something in one of two categories when you shouldn’t
What is a Genotype?
The specific genetic makeup of an individual
What is a Phenotype?
The observable characteristics produced by the genetic commands
