Lec 21 Flashcards
Functions of cytoskeleton
Resist compression (done by Microtubules- pushed against the edge of the cell and tube shaped to resist compression)
Resist tension (done by actin and intermediate filaments)
Move chromosomes during mitosis (done by Microtubules)
Divide cell during cytokinesis (done by microtubules and actin)
Toxin
Affects the cytoskeleton
Interferes with the breakdown or formation of protein filaments
Taxol
Source- fungus living on pacific yew tree
Inhibits microtubules
Causes microtubules to grow and get stuck, leading to a big ball of microtubules being formed
Taxol causes the cell to get stuck in
Mitosis because the microtubules cannot separate the chromosomes during anaphase
Colchine
Source- autumn crocuses
Causes the microtubules to be unable to grow,
The microtubules get stuck when they shrink
Colchine consequence
Cells get stuck in mitosis
Phalloidin
Source- death cap mushrooms
Inhibits F-actin from turning into G-actin
Phalloidin consequence
Tough to tell because the mushroom has worse ingredients
Phalloidin mechanim
Phalloidin can be attached to actin which is then attached to a fluorescent dye so that it is visible
Acrylamide
Synthetic used in PAGE (protein gel)
Breaks down IFs into keratins
Acrylamide consequences
Kills sensory neurons
