L20: Central Nervous System (CNS) Flashcards
what does the CNS consist of?
- brain
- spinal cord
what does PNS consist of?
- 12 pairs of cranial nerves
- 31 pairs of spinal nerves
what is gray matter
- largely cell bodies and unmyelinated axons
what is white matter
largely myelinated axons of neurones
how much of the bodies neural tissues does the brain hold?
98%
how much does the brain weigh
typically 1.4kg
volume of the brain?
between 750-2100cc
what is considered typical brain volume
1200cc
what is pia mater
- closest layer to brain
- follows irregularities of brain surface
what is arachnoid mater?
- subdural layer with projections to pia
- forms subarachnoid space for CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)
what is dura mater?
- external dense connective tissue (protection)
what does meninges consist of
- pia mater
- arachnoid mater
- dura mater
what is cerebrospinal fluid?
how much is produced per day?
- clear fluid
- 150,500ml produced per day
role of cerebrospinal fluid?
- supplies nutrients
- removes waste products
- protection
where is cerebrospinal fluid found?
- subarachnoid space in arachnoid mater
what is prosencephalon?
forebrain
cerebrum: telencephalon), thalamus, (hypothalamus: diencephalon
what is mesencephalon?
midbrain
- narrow connection of forebrain to hindbrain
what does the midbrain contain?
cerebral aqueduct
what is rhombencephalon?
hindbrain
- medulla oblongata (myelencephalon)
- pons (metencephalon)
- cerebellum
what does the brainstem consist of ?
- midbrain
- pons
- medulla oblongata
what are the folds of the cerebral surface?
- gyri (gyrus)
- sulci (sulcus)
in the midbrain, what is the tectum?
-visual and auditory processing
in the tectum, what is the superior colliculus?
- reflex to visual stimulation e.g light
in the tectum, what is the inferior colliculus?
- reflex to auditory stimulation e.g loud noise
what is the corpora quadrigemina?
the four colliculi
in the midbrain, what is the tegmentum?
- subconscious control of upper limb position and muscle tone
what does the tegmentum consist of?
- red nucleus
- substansia nigra
what is the pons?
‘bridge’ linking the cerebellum with the mesencephalon, diencephalon, cerebrum and spinal cord
what does the pons consist of?
- nuclei of cranial nerves ( V, VI, VII, VIII)
role of the nuclei in the pons?
- respiration control
- relay info to and from cerebellum
- interconnect ascending and descending tracts of the CNS
what is cerebellum?
- monitors all proprioceptive, visual, tactile, balance and auditory sensations
primary functions of cerebellum?
- automatic control of postural muscles of body
- programming/fine tuning conscious and subconscious movements
what does the medulla oblongata connect
brain to spinal cord
what is the medulla oblongata responsible for
- complex autonomic reflexes
- control of visceral functions
what does the medulla oblongata consist of
- cardiovascular centres
- respiratory centres
- cranial nerve nuclei
- relay stations for sensory and motor pathways
