Most important thing we can do when responding to a forensic removal
Don’t loose or add any evidence. Referred to as cross contamination. Wear all PPEs and dispose of them properly.
When transporting the body of a forensic removal,
The body must be transported the way it was found so evidence can be properly collected. Whether body was found prone or not.
In suspicious cases
Hands are often bagged in paper bags to protect the evidence under the fingernails
Lightweight body bags are usually only
7 mils. Thick and constructed with vinyl material that is easily torn.
Death scene calls you should use a body bag that is
10-12 mil. Thick. 18 mil. Thickness with handles should be used for water retrieval.
If making a removal for a high profile case
Cover all funeral home names and symbols on cars. No name tags.

when using an oversized casket

Burial at sea (BAS)
Performed on us naval vessels. Committal ceremony is performed while ship is deployed so family cannot be present. Commanding officer of ship will make record of latitude and longitude, time and date once service is completed then give that to the family
Eligibility for BAS
- Active duty members of military 2. Honorably discharged vets 3. Us civillian marine personnel of the military sealift command 4. Dependent family members of active duty, retirees, and veterans
How to get started with BAS
Person authorized to direct disposition (PADD) will complete the BAS request forms. 1. Photocopy of D.C.2. Burial transit permit3. Copy of DD214
Cremains for BAS
Must be in an urn. Can be temporary.
Casketed remains for BAS
Must be in metal casket.
Organ donation
Donation rate is slow because of lack of knowledge, fears and misconceptions, lack of family discussion.
OPO
Organ procurement organization.

Must be brain dead and receiving oxygen through a ventilator. Can be removed after cardiac death also. Brain death- no blood flow to brainCan’t have HIV or cancer
