the decision on which vehicle to use is determined by such factors as:

  1. age of deceased-some directors prefer not using a hearse for an infant removal
  2. location of the deceased-some institutions such as hospital or nursing homes prefer that removals be made using a vehicle other than a hearse.

no matter what vehicle, it must be clean and in good repair, professional looking and driven safely and professionally. Some younger people prefer no hearse on house calls as well.

Adult removal:

  1. cot
  2. removable stretcher-on top of cotsome people prefer pillows, head rest, removal pouch, and sheets.

recommended if a pouch isnt used, a rubber or plastic sheet be placed under the deceased for ease in cleaning if any fluid would leak from the deceased during the transfer.

removal vehicle should also contain:

gloves, towels, cotton, spray deoderant and disinfectant, disposable apron/surgical type gowns.

Infant removal: director may prefer to use a bassinet to carry the infant. should also be a small rubber or plastic sheet placed under the infant. infant should be covered with a baby blanket.

director’s attire during removal:

no one type of attire.most wear conservative business clothing such as a suit or sport coat with a tie for men and similar business clothing for women. in some areas of the country, a more casual style of clothing is worn. should always be neat and conform to local customs.

  1. always send at least two people
  2. if it is custom of the funeral director to stay and talk with a family for any length of time after the deceased is placed in the removal vehicle, two vehicles should be sent to the home.

This allows the removal vehicle to return to the funeral home, eliminating any anxiety the family may feel by having the deceased parked in the driveway or in the street while talking.

director should introduce themselves, ask where deceased is located, while walking to the room, the director should be observing-stairways-size of hallways-number of turns- throw rugs-objects or furniture that needs to be removed.

she should advise the family that the cot will be brought in and ask that the family move out of the room of transfer of the deceased-unless they object, then let them stay. move furniture out of the way

director returns to removal vehicle and brings another employee, the cot, and any other necessary items into the house.

transfer should be made quickly and quietly.

  • deceased should be wrapped in a plastic sheet and/or placed in the removal pouch, strapped onto the cot, and taken through the house in a quiet dignified manner.
  • remove soiled bed linen and place them neatly aside or in a pillow case.-blankets arranged neatly-after placing deceased in removal vehicle, director returns to the house and replaces any furniture that was removed.

  • usually a designated area to park
  • procedures usually include:

sign a form indicating you are taking possession of the deceased, signing a receipt for any belongings received, and if necessary the director must present a signed body release and her funeral director’s license where required.

-avoid crowded areas of the hospital and avoid using general elevators.
