Cellulitis
fast spreading inflammation from a bacterial infection of skin and connective tissues
Predisposing factors to cellulitis
increased age
immunosuppression
trauma
presence of wound or venous insufficiency
Signs and symptoms of cellulitis
localized redness that may spread quickly
skin that is warm or hot to touch
local abscess or ulceration
tenderness to palpation, chills, fever and malaise
Treatment of cellulitis
immediate referral to physician
Contact dermatitis
superficial irritation of skin resulting from localized irritation
very common
Signs and symptoms of contact dermatitis
edema may occur
can expand beyond initial point
Eczema
dermatitis
immune abnormality
allergic reaction
Who is higher risk for eczema?
infants and children
geriatric
Dry gangrene
loss of vascular supply resulting in local tissue death
fingers, toes, limbs most affected
sometimes results in auto-amputation
Dry gangrene is common in those with
diabetes
atherosclerosis
Treatment of dry gangrene
immediate medical intervention
Wet gangrene
associated bacterial infection
can develop after severe burn, frostbite or injury and requires immediate treatment since it tends to spread fairly quickly and can be fatal
Onychomycosis
fungal infection that primarily affects toenails and nailbeds
Psoriasis-Plaque
chronic autoimmune disease
bilateral fashion anywhere on body and will tend to itch and flake
life-long condition
Tinea Pedis
athlete’s foot
itching, redness, peeling skin between toes, pain, odor, and in more severe cases breaks in skin
