A
Hypericum perforatum, St John’s wort.

Use:
A
Nerve damage.

Mental picture:
A
- Nervous system complaints after injury or shock.
- Sadness and melancholy after injury.

General picture:
A
- The ‘arnica of the nerves’.
- For injuries to nerve-rich areas especially where accompanied by shooting, darting pain.
- Have a desire for warm drinks.

Indications (if they fit the symptom picture):
A
- Any nerve injury ―accident, surgery, infection.
- Bells palsy from exposure to cold air. Hypericum 200C every 4 hours for 1 day. Follow with gelsemium 200C, 1 dose daily for 3 days.
- Phantom limb pain (amputation), 15C taken 2 x daily until pain subsides / changes.
- Shooting pains along a nerve e.g., sciatica. Pains appear suddenly and disappear gradually.
- Neuralgia― < change of weather.

Case example 1:
A
- Male 23 years old fell off a ladder and injured his back.
- He was in shock from the fall and had suffered bruising accompanied by a stabbing pain in his mid to lower back.
- The client was prescribed:
- Aconite 200C―1 dose (mental shock).
- Arnica 200C― one dose daily for 5 days (bruising / physical shock).
- Hypericum 30C― taken 2 x daily for 2–3 weeks or until shooting pain subsides (nerve pain).

Case example 2:
A
- A 53-year-old man developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome, an autoimmune condition associated with ascending nerve paralysis.
- He was treated with corticosteroids in hospital, but was left with partial paralysis of the feet and severe neuralgia.
Prescribed:
* Hypericum200C once daily for 5 days. Paralysis improved.
* This was followed by gelsemium30C 2 x daily for 2 months. The neuralgia slowly began improving in the 2nd month and gradually lessened until completely resolved 4 months after starting homeopathic treatment.
