Herbal Medicine II - Adaptogens (The Immune System) Flashcards
Adaptogens additional info:
Adaptogens such as Korean ginseng, Siberian ginseng and rhodiola root increase energy, stamina and the power to resist the adverse effects of stress:
* Important support during difficult times in our lives, and when our energy is at a low ebb, but they must be used in moderation.
* Not only are these plants nearly extinct in the wild due to over-harvesting, but long-term use is not advised because of their stimulating and ‘heating’ effect.
When we are overwhelmed and have no choice but to ‘push on’, adaptogens are ideal, taken for a few weeks or months:
* However, from a naturopathic perspective there is one solution to stress, fatigue and exhaustion. We must change our lifestyles and allow ourselves to rest.
It is only when we are calm and rested that the body can digest food, assimilate nutrients, eliminate wastes, sleep deeply, and repair itself properly.
Adaptogens:
‘Tonics’ used for thousands of years in the East, are often more suitable for our stressed and exhausted patients:
Ashwagandha root:
Ashwagandha root increases strength, stamina, but relaxes the nerves.
* Ideal in our fast-paced world.
* 1 tsp powder decocted 2 x daily, or 1 tsp powder in hot milk at night.
Astragalus root
Astragalus root increases stamina, digestive power and immunity, but without stimulating the system.
* 1 tsp decocted 2 x daily.
* Don’t take during excess heat states and acute infections as they may ‘feed the pathogen’.
Schizandra berries
Schizandra berries increase energy, stamina and immune function without stimulating the system.
* They also have antioxidant properties and promote liver detoxification pathways.
* 1 tsp decocted 3 x daily, OR infused for 1 hour.
Liquorice root
Liquorice root is anti-inflammatory, restorative and supports the adrenals by sparing cortisol.
* 1 tsp decocted 3 x daily.
Nerve Support
Support the nerves! If we are more relaxed during our busy days, and sleep more deeply at night, we will naturally feel less stress and have more energy —e.g. oat straw, passionflower.
