- Familial tendency
- Straining at stool
- Prolonged sitting or standing
- Pregnancy, prolonged labor
- Obesity
- Portal HPN
- Anal intercourse
- Colon malignancy
Assessment
Anal itching
Bleeding with defecation of hard stool and pain d/t stretching and irritation of mucosa
Assessment
Extreme pain d/t thrombosis and edema
Appear reddish, blue lump
Hint: External and Edema
External Hemorrhoids
Assessment
Not usually painful until it bleeds and prolapse when enlarged
Some protrudes during defecation and retracts after defecation
Internal Hemorrhoids
Diagnostic Procedures
- Digital Rectal Examination
- Sigmoidoscopy
- Colonoscopy to R/O colorectal cancer
Nursing Management
- High fiber diet and increase OFI
- Administer stool softeners and use ointments
- Apply ice packs for several hours followed by warm packs
