Pre-disposing factors/Risk factors
A
- Low fiber diet
- Increased refined carbohydrate diet
- Obesity
- Recurrent smoking
- Regular use of NSAIDs
- Family Hx

Clinical Manifestations
A
- Acute onset of crampy abd pain (LLQ)
- Abd distention
- Low grade fever
- Chronic constipation with intervals of diarrhea
- Occult bleeding
- N/V
- Leukocytosis

- Bowel obstruction
- Hemorrhage
- Shock
- Bowel perforation and Peritonitis

- Barium enema and Colonoscopy
- CBC
- Urinalysis
- CT Scan
- Abd x-ray

Nursing Interventions
A
- High fiber diet (soft)
- Increase OFI
- Administer bulk laxatives and anticholinergics
- Encourage pt to lose weight and avoid activities that increases intra-abdominal pressure
