Diagnostic Tests
A
- Ultrasonography (procedure of choice)
- Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- IV Cholangiogram
- Prolong Prothrombin time
- CBC - Leukocytosis (WBC count)
- Cholecystography

Types of Cholecystography
A
- Oral - done 10-12hrs after administration of contrast medium
- IV - done 10 minutes after administration of contrast medium

Nursing Interventions
A
- Meperidine HCL (drug of choice; for pain)
- AVOID MORPHINE
- Use of baking soda or calamine containing lotions
- Encourage low fat diet
- Dissolution therapy: administration of bile salts

- Infusion of a solvent mono-octanoion or methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE)
- Intracorporeal Lithotripsy - use of laser pulse technology creating a mechanical shock wave
- Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy - uses repeated shock directed at the gallstones at the gallbladder
