Hemophilia Flashcards
Hemophilia
A bleeding disorder where a person’s blood does not clot normally leading to delays in coagulation
Leads to excessive blood loos
Clinical manifestation
Hematoma and bruising formation from minor contacts
Delayed hemorrage afte minor injury
Persistent bleeding after cuts
Hemarthrosis (bleeding in jts)
Episodes of spontaneous bleeding into jts, muscles, and internal organs
Hemarthrosis
Bleeding into joint space (typically in a synovial jt)
Causes swelling, pain, warmth and stiffness
Blood is an irritant to the synovium, causing inflammation
Intramuscular hemorrhage
Bleeding into muscle
Pan swelling, limiting ROM, protective spasm, warmth etc
Medical management
Factor replacement therapy
Pain medication
Corticosteriods to treat chronic Synovitis
Rehabilitation management of active bleed
Acute stage (RICE, non or minimal weight bearing device, splinting)
Subacute stage (Progressive weight bearing, mvmt and exercise)
Muscle (RICE, progressive mvmt, appropriate weight bearing status)
Rehab management post bleed
Education (benefits of exercise, injury risk protection strategies)
Isometric muscle exercises
Slowly progressing strength t exercsies (when pain free)
Slow progressive return to weight-bearing activities
Proprioception exercises
Rehab considerations/ contraindications
Use of heat is contraindicated
Joint manipulation
Contact sports
High falls risks activities
Heavy weight (very heavy) not recommended
