GBS
An autoimmune disorder causing acute inflammation and demyelination of cranial nerves and peripheral nerves myelin sheath
Demyelination cause it impulse conduction to be slow
3 phase of GBS
Progressive deterioration (1-4 weeks)
Plateau (peaked)
Recovery (progressive recovery 6mnths- 2yrs)
What is usually the first thing effected
Ankles (foot drop)
Symmetrical disease and starts distal to proximal (recovery would be proximal to distal)
Early S&S
Distal lower extremity paresis (weakness) and sensory disturbance (glove and/or stocking distribution)
Muscles aches and tenderness
General S&S
(Presents like a LMN)
ANS dysfunction
Atrophy
Fatigue
Hypo reflexia
Hypotonia
Pain
Paresis
Paresthesia
Respiratory problems
Complications of GBS
Autonomic instability
Deep vein thrombosis
Pressure sores
Respiratory tract infection
Respiratory failure
Interventions- medical
Medical management
- corticosteriods
- may require intubation and mechanical ventilation
- pain
- immunosuppressive

Pulmonary rehab
Strengthening
Gentle stretching and positioning
Mobility training
