Radiation therapy side effects for physios to know
Fatigue, myelosuppression, nausea, vomiting, local skin problems (red, blistered, swollen)
PT management
Improve quality of life
Cancer related pain and fatigue
PT assessment
Pain and fatigue levels
Peripheral neuropathies due to chemo
Functional mobility
Balance changes
Upper extremity function
Muscular endurance and strength
Cardiovascular fxn
Cognitive changes due to chemo
PT goals and interventions
Decrease pain (TENS, cold pack, relaxation, gentl mvmt, exercise)
Decrease stress in involved bones (education on risks and protective strategies, splinting, assistive devices)
Manage fatigue (energy conservation techniques with the 5 Ps, exercise, ADL and functional training)
Improve ROM
Improve muscle strength
Improve cardiovascular endurance and fxn
Improve independence in ambulation
Improve balance and increase falls risk
Special considerations
Bone metastasis- avoid resistance training, manual therapy, minimize rotation to avoid # risk
Avoid modalities in the area of the tumor But check sensations prior to use
Avoid chlorine, hands on technique and use of topical ointments over irritated creams
Alter, adapt or delay treatments if patients blood counts are too low
