Gluteal Region and Posterior Thigh Flashcards
Superficial layer of muscles of gluteus (4)
max, med, min, TFL
Deep layers of the gluteus (5)
piriformis, obturator internus, superior gemellus, inferior gemellus, quadratus femoris
Origin of glute max
posterior ilium, sacrum, coccyx, sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion of glute max
IT track and gluteal tuberosity on femur
Glute max is innervated by
inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Functions of glute max
extend and laterally rotate thigh
Three gluteal bursa
trochanteric
ischial
gluteofemoral
Glute med and min origin
posterior/lateral surface of ilium
Glute med and min insertion
lateral surface of greater trochanter
Functions of glute med and min
abduct and medially rotate thigh
What does the glute med and min prevent?
pelvic drop
What nerve innervates glute med and min?
superior gluteal nerve
What nerve innervates the TFL?
superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Origin of piriformis?
anterior surface of sacrum
Function of piriformis?
abduct hip joint and lateral rotator of hip
