71
Q

purpose of the VDP? tenets?

A

founded in 1910 for the promotion of quality wine from traditional grapes

All wines must be estate grown. Hand-harvesting is required for all single vineyard wines and for any Prädikat wines of Auslese level or above. In their vineyards, members must cultivate a minimum 80% of traditional grape varieties

2012 regulations established:a regional tier (Gutswein), a village tier (Ortswein), premier cru vineyards (Erste Lage), and grand cru vineyards (Grosse Lage)

the wines may be dry or one of the pradikat styles.
note dry wines are considered Qualitatswein legally, so chaptalization is allowed for these (and is used frequently for spatburgunder)

72
Q

why is Rheingau so successful with sweet wines

A

Botrytis is a common occurrence near the broad Rhine, especially in vineyards nearest the river.

Even as the 50th parallel runs directly through the Rheingau, the moderating impact of the Rhine on local temperatures allows Riesling to hang on the vine into the early autumn for the late harvests necessary for Prädikatswein.
