Q

2023 Champagne Harvest - size? Vintage conditions?

A

Large yields, at least partially due to larger bunches.
- Near-perfect flowering conditions and regular rainfall throughout the growing season are the two most frequently cited reasons for these exceptional bunch weights. - Ideal spring weather prevented any significant frost, hail and downy mildew losses.
- in August, the weather turned more erratic, alternating between frequent heavy showers and hot, muggy weather which created the ideal conditions for grey rot to develop, especially in the more heavily loaded vines. - - A heatwave has coincided with the beginning of harvest, increasing sour rot pressure.

Q

3 factors impacting the intensity of pyrazines?

A

Sunlight: more sun = less pyrazines

Soil: “In the Bordeaux climate, soil has a decisive influence on MP concentrations … due to its effect on vegetative growth … grapes grown on well-drained, gravel soils have the lowest concentrations. On limestone or clay-silt soils [which retain more water than gravel, encouraging vigor], Cabernet Sauvignon has a higher MP content.” The effect of low soil water retention can be mimicked in irrigated vineyards by reducing irrigation at specific times during the growing season to inhibit shoot growth.

Temperature: warmer areas have less intense pyrazines, cooler areas have more intense pyrazines
