- A decimal system, which means it is based on the
multiples of ten
METRIC SYSTEM
The base unit of this system are:
➔ Gram - weight
➔ Liters - volume
➔ Meters - length
Was the first system of medication used by the
Pharmacist & physician. Originated in Greece & made
its way to Europe via Rome & France .
- Units of weight such as grains, ounces, pounds
rooted in this system
- Utilizes Roman numerals, the letters I,V,X & the basic
symbol in this system is used in dosage & calculation
that is usually designated in lower cases (i,v,x)
- Common units are grain (gr) & ounce
- Unit symbol is clearly written before the quantity
APOTHECARY SYSTEM
- A modified system of measurement; large liquid
volumes were based in familiar trading system like
pints, quarts, & gallons - More likely to used by the PT at home
- Preferred to be expressed the quantity in Arabic
number - Teaspoon, ounce, cup, pint, quart & pound
- Quantities of less than one are preferably expressed
in common fractions like ½
HOUSEHOLD SYSTEM
IU - Represent potency used to measure things such as
Vitamins & chemica
INTERNATIONAL UNIT
U - Represents a standardized amount needed to
produced a desired effect’
- eg: penicillin, heparin
UNIT
mU - One thousandth of a unit
- eg: Pitocin is measure in mU 1 U = 1 mU
milliunit
mEq - Used when referring to a concentration of serum
electrolyte such as calcium, magnesium, potassium &
sodium
