This form conveys the standard or basic meaning of the root verb. It is roughly similar to the English infinitive.
Type I فَعَلَ
- transitive of type I verb
(e. g. to draw near قَرُبَ, becomes to draw something near قَرَّبَ ) - causative of type I verb
(e. g to know علم in form 1 becomes to teach علّم in this form. - intensive (makes stronger or more intense) of type I
(e. g to smash كسّر is the more intense version of the root verb to break كسر.
Type II فَعَّلَ
- attempting to do
(e. g to precede سَبَقَ, becomes to try to precede/race against سابَقَ) - doing an action with someone else
(e. g to write كَتَبَ, becomes to correspond with s/o كاتَبَ)
For example the root verb to be safe سلم in this form becomes to make peace with someone سالم. To become known علن in form 1 becomes to disclose something to someone عالن.
Type III فاعَلَ
- causative and transitive (needs an object) of type 1
(e. g to wear لَبِسَ becomes to dress s/o أَلْبَسَ)
To dictate أكتب instead of just to write كتب in form 1. To be good صلح in form 1 versus to put in the order أصلح . This form can also be related to different parts of the day.
Type IV أفْعَلَ
- reflexive or passive of type II or II
(e. g to train s/o دَرَّبَ becomes to train oneself تَدَرَّب)
(e. g to mention sthg ذَكَرَ in type I, to remind s/o or sthg ذَكَّرَ in type II, to remember sthg تَذَكَّرَ in type V)
To observe رقب in form 1 becomes to anticipate ترقب . To be destroyed تنقض versus to destroy نقض in Form 1.
