Exam 2_Diffusion, Osmosis, and Active Transport Flashcards
Are plasma membrane symmetric? Explain.
No, the interior of the membrane isn’t identical to the exterior.
what is diffusion?
a passive process of transport
Cytosol
the aqueous component of the cytoplasm of a cell.
What is the extracellular fluid?
the fluid found outside of the cells
What are the 4 factors that affect the rate of diffusion?
Extend of the concentration gradient, mass of the molecules diffusing, temperature, and solvent density.
What is facilitated transport?
material moves across the plasma membrane with the assistance of transmembrane proteins down a concentration gradient without the expenditure of cellular energy
What are transport proteins?
the integral proteins involved in facilitated transport, that are channels or carriers
What does the glycoprotein do?
allows the material that is needed for the cell to be removed from the extracellular fluid
What is osmosis?
movement of water molecules through a semipermeable membrane according to the water’s concentration gradient which inversely proportional to the solutes concentration
