Exam 2_Articles for Stem Assignment/Discussion Flashcards
Do this after studying all material; extra credit
what is cloning?
making genetically identical copies of organisms
why is the donor cell enucleated?
So that the Donor cell’s nucleus isn’t used, that way the DNA that will be cloned is used instead.
What does enucleated mean?
nucleus was removed
what is a potential benefit of cloning animals like sheep?
you can produce sheep that produce antibodies in milk to treat cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis and cancer. Even the ability to make lots of sheep with whole human organs, hearts, kidneys and livers
What is somatic cell nuclear transfer?
take the ovum from the female and remove all DNA inside. Then take the nucleus from the somatic cell of the soon to be cloned and put into the ovum. This new eggs cells is then put into a surrogate mother.
what are some difficulties with the process of cloning?
success rates are very low; spindle proteins not available
Why we should not clone humans?
possibly die prematurely; weak immune system; defective hearts, brains, livers, bad personality, unethical, very risky, not efficient
Why is it easy for scientists, farmers, and gardeners to clone plants?
Plants can easily be cut off and replanted called vegetative propagation,
Where plants are able to reproduce from themselves using non-reproductive parts like the leaves, stems and roots this is called _____?
Vegetative Propagation
