DISP - Frame Adjustment and Repairs - Week 5 Flashcards
How is the contour of a frame checked (4)?
Visual inspection from the front, above, below, and the side.
In all cases, the lenses should be aligned.
What is X-ing?
The lenses, if skewed and viewed from the side, will form an X if one lens is tilted more anteriorly/posteriorly than the other.
What should the temple arm angles ideally be?
Slightly wider than parallel
How should the temple arms appear when the frame is viewed from the side?
They should both be aligned
Describe the four-point touch.
Both temple ends and the eye wire should all be touching a flat surface when placed down.
What are four common patient complaints about frame fitting?
Sore behind one ear
Sore on one side of the nose
Frame slipping but tight
Frame loose
List the 6 steps to adjusting a frame
Horizontal alignment
Pantoscopic tilt
Temple width
Side bow
Length to bend
Anatomical bend
Describe face wrap.
Ensuring the frame follows the line of the face
Describe splay and frontal angles for frames.
Splay - angle formed between the bridge of the frame when viewed from above
Frontal - angle of the bridge of the frame when viewed from in front
What is the correct length to bend for the temple arms?
2mm past the bend
Where does a properly positioned temple bend fall on the ear?
Just behind the top of the ear
What is the most sensitive area of the ear when folded forward?
The mastoid region
What are the pliers for temple manipulation?
Nylon jaw pliers
What are the pliers for hinge joint manipulation?
Angling pliers
What are the pliers for adjusting pantoscopic tilt?
Finger piece pliers
What are square/round pliers used for (3)?
Adjusting X-ing
Pantoscopic tilt
Folding angle
Describe the process to solder a metal frame (9).
Remove the lenses and plastic trims
Clean area with fine sandpaper and solvent
Hold the pieces together
Apply borax flux
Apply solder
Apply heat until solder runs into the join
Place frame into dilute sulphuric acid
Clean and buff frame
Inspect and reassemble
Describe the process to resink a joint in a plastic frame (5).
Remove the broken joint with heat pliers
Clean frame and use acetate if necessary
Hold new joint in position with heat pliers
Apply heat and press the joint into position
Release once in position
Describe the process to repairing a broken bridge of an acetate frame (5).
Drill a small hole into the bridge on both sides
Cut a piece of rigid wire 2mm shorter than the total of the holes
Place both bridge ends into a shallow dish of acetone to soften
Once soft, insert the wire in, and push the bridge together
Place the frame in position into a soft material like plasticine to allow to set
