Early pregnancy factor (EPF)
-Immunosuppressant protein in maternal serum (24-48 hours)
Assay of hCG
This hormone is produced by the cells of the trophoblast and maintains the corpus luteum (remnants of the ovulated follicle)
-It is usually only produced if implantation occurs
-It can be found in the maternal urine at the end of the second week
Which imaging technique can confirm pregnancy and when?
Ultrasound–at the end of 5th week
Signs and symptoms of pregnancy
-Missed period
-Abdominal pain
-hCG lower than expected
Tubal Pregnancy causes, sequelae, and treatment
Causes: Factors the delay or prevent transport
Sequelae: Tubal rupture and haemorrhage
Treatment: Termination of pregnancy, possible removal of tube
Gastrulation
Process of formation of embryonic mesoderm, which converts the bilaminar disc to a trilaminar disc (3rd week)
Notochord
A longitudinal rod of cells that forms the basis for the vertebral column
Somite
One of the longitudinal series of segments into which the body is divided. There are 42-44 pairs in total
Sclerotome
Cells of the somite which form vertebrae and ribs
Dermatome
Cells of the somite which form the dermis of the skin
-Nerve that innervates this area of skin
Myotome
-Cells of the somite which form skeletal muscle
-Nerve that innervates this area of muscle
