Day 11 - Ms1 Quiz Flashcards
Classic sx carpal tunnel syndrome
Wrist pain tends to radiate up arm, worsen w/ hand flexion or grasping (may drop things), numbness in thumb/middle/index fingers, Tinel sign (tapping carpal bone elicits wrist tingling & pain), Phalen sign (dorsum of hands together for 30 s, reproduces sx); May have thenar atrophy if long-term
Nerve injury in carpal tunnel syndrome
Median nerve
Monteggia v. Galeazzi fractures
Proximal ulnar fracture w/ anterior disloation of radial head v. Radial fracture with dislocation of DRUJ (distal radial ulnar joint)
Dx/Complications: fall on outstreched arm, snuffbox tenderness
Scaphoid fracture; Risk of AVN
Dx/Complications: Anterior shoulder dislocation
Axillary nerve injury
Dx/Complications: 5th metacarpal fracture
Boxer fracture; Commonly assoc w/ Bite wound, that may require irrigation & antibx
Dx/Complications: Humerus fracture
(Mid-shaft) Radial nerve injury
Dx/Complications: Hip fracture
DVT formation & AVN
Dx/Complications: Femur fracture
Fat embolism & severe blood loss into leg compartment
Dx/Complications: Tibia fracture
Compartment syndrome
Dx/Complications: Pelvic fracture
Hypovolemic shock from blood loss
Cause of back pain: pain increases w/ passive straight leg raise
Disc herniation
Cause of back pain: pain lessens w/ flexion of hips, bending over shopping cart
Spinal stenosis
Cause of back pain: Elderly, weight loss, pain constant but worse when supine
Spinal tumor
Cause of back pain: Acute urinary retention
Cauda equina syndrome
Cause of back pain: Pain made worse by walking and standing
Spinal stenosis
Cause of back pain: Loss of foot dorsiflexion, pain on crossed straight leg raise
Disc herniation
Cause of back pain: Pain limited to paraspinal region
Muscular strain
Nerve injury: Humeral shaft
Radial nerve
Nerve injury: Surgical neck of humerus
Axillary nerve
Nerve injury: Supracondyle of humerus
Median nerve
Nerve injury: Medial epicondyle of humerus
Ulnar nerve
Nerve injury: Anterior shoulder dislocation
Axillary nerve
Nerve injury: Injury to carpal tunnel
Median nerve
Conditions favoring posterior shoulder dislocation
Seizures, electrocution (incl. lightning strikes),
Tx compartment syndrome
Emergent fasciotomy of all fascial compartments of that extremity, not just compartment affected
Unhappy triad of knee
ACL injury with MCL and medial meniscus tear
