Crossfit Level 3 - How its Made: Cholesterol Production in Your Body (D5) Flashcards
What perecentage of cholesterol in your blood stream comes from the food you eat?
20%
Excess cholestorol in the bloodstream is a key contributor to what?
artery clogging plaque
Cholesterol is needed to make what 3 important thing?
- vitamin D
- hormones (including testosterone and estrogen)
- fat-dissolving bile acids
Low-density lipoprotein—better known as LDL is known as what?
“Bad cholesterol”
What are the 5 main types of lipoproteins?
- chylomicrons
- very-low-density lipoprotien (VLDL)
- intermediete-density lipoprotein (IDL)
- low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
- high-density lipoprotein (HDL)
Why is LDL (low density protein) known as bad cholesterol?
because it delivers cholesterol to tissues and is strongly associated with the buildup of artery clogging plaque
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles are known as “good cholesterol”, why?
Because some of them remove cholesterol from cirulation and from artery walls and return it to the liver for excretion.
