Unmanned Aircraft Systems:
The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) will deploy Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) as a law enforcement tool to enhance public safety, attain situational awareness of tactical and critical/emergency incidents, collect investigatory evidence, and/or memorialize crime scenes through aerial video and photography. A UAS may be used in lieu of a manned aircraft where operationally and legally feasible, to include adherence to existing criminal and civil laws.

A UAS may not be used to gather evidence or other information unless specifically excepted under Florida Law. Officers are not permitted to use a UAS with imaging capabilities to record an image of privately owned real property or of the owner, tenant, occupant, or licensee of such property with the intent to conduct surveillance on the individual or property.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems:/UAS Allowable Uses:
To counter a high risk of a terrorist attack by a specific individual or organization if the United States Secretary of Homeland Security determines that credible intelligence indicates that there is
such a risk. To search a property pursuant to a search warrant that specifically allows the use of a UAS. When there is reasonable suspicion that, under particular circumstances, swift action is needed to prevent imminent danger to life or serious damage to property, to forestall the imminent escape of a suspect or the destruction of evidence, or to achieve purposes including, but not limited to, facilitating the search for a missing person. Unmanned Aircraft Systems:/Recurrent Training and Proficiency:
Operations permitting, UAS training will be conducted on a regular basis by all certified personnel. All MDPD personnel that are designated as UAS operators must remain current in their unit’s UAS in order to be readily available for assignment as a PIC. Remaining current for UAS operations will consist of a minimum of three takeoff and landing events within the last ___ days prior to an actual mission to act as a PIC. For night operations, a minimum of three takeoff and landing events within the last __ days must be conducted one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise in order to be deemed “night current”. Meeting the night currency requirements supersedes day time currency for all operations.
