Piano/ pianoforte

A

replaced the harpsichord and clavichord. Invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in florence in 1700. Dynamics through touch alone. Keyboard often took lead in chamber music when the parts of the keyboard was fully written out.Due to the fact that women learned piano and had more time to practice.

chamber music for 2-5 strings alone. 2 violins, viola and cello. Concertant quartets- all parts are of equal importance.
Clarinet was invented around 1710.
18th century orchestra was around 25 players. Much smaller than todays.

major orchestral genre of the mid to late 18th century. 3-4 movements, homophonic, without division between orch and solo.- ancestor the italian sinfonia. Fast slow fast, binary forms overtures. Most prominent original composer of symphonies was Giovanni Battista Sammartini 1700-1775 ex Symphony in f major No. 32 1740 strings in four parts. 3 movements.

became famous, known for their discipline and technique. Under the leadership of Johann Stamitz 1717-1757. DYNAMICS. Stamitz was first to use standard symphony plan- 4 movements, with a minuet and trio as the 3rd movement. Fast presto 4th movement. Used strings and oboes and horns.
