chapter 17 Flashcards
autonomic ns
-regulate temp
-coordinate cardiovasc, respir, digestive, excretory and reproductive function
-afferent pathways are from the visceral receptors
-axons innervate visceral organs
somatic ns
-axons innervate skeletal muscle
-afferent originate in skeletal muscle
autonomic divisions
-sympathetic (thoracolumbar)
-parasympathetic
symp
fight or flight
-thoracic and upper nerves synapse in ganglia near the cord
-increase metabolism and alertness
para
rest and digest
-also called craniosacral
-located near target organ
-energy conservation
autonomic ganglia
2 neurons that synapse and connect @autonomic ganglion
somatic motor neuron
one neuron to muscle
autonomic motor neuron
2 neurons to smooth muscle/ gland
sympathetic division
-preganglionic fibers release ACh (stimulatory)
-post ganglionic fibers release norepi (stimulatory)
parasympathetic division
-preganglionic release ACh
-post ganglionic release ACh but its inhibitory not stimulatory
Specialized neurons
In interior suprarenal/ adrenal gland, they are modified and release epinephrine and norepinephrine (neurotransmitter that act like hormones)
Symp pre ganglionic
Cell bodies in the lateral gray horns, axons enter ventral root
Sympathetic chain ganglia
Control effectors in the body wall, head, neck, limbs and thoracic cavity, form spinal nerve (has whiter ramus)
Collateral ganglia (sympathetic)
Neurons innovate effectors in the abdominopelvic cavity
