Ch3 Laboratory findings in inflammation EC Flashcards
Neutrophilic leukocytosis
Cytokine release of postmitotic neutrophils from bone marrow
Left-shifted smear
Increase band PMNs (>10%) in peripheral blood
Toxic granulation
Dark blue/purple primary granules in PMNs
Due to abnormality in maturation of granules
Dohle bodies
Gray-blue inclusions in PMNs
Accompanies toxic granulation
Lab findings in chronic inflammation
Monocytosis and increased IgG
Corticosteroids effect in blood:
Increased PMNs (inhibit integrins) Decreased lymphocytes (induce apoptosis)
ESR
Rate of settling of RBCs
Increased with plasma factors (rouleau formation)
C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
Marker of necrosis and disease activity
Serum protein electrophoresis in acute inflammation
Decreased albumin (due to increased synthesis of acute phase reactants) No alteration in gamma-globulin peak
Serum protein electrophoresis in chronic inflammation
Decreased albumin
Polyclonal gammopathy due to increased synthesis of IgG
