parents exert little or no control over the child’s behaviors, + consult w child when making decisions
ex) child assist w deciding whether they will watch tv
democratic/authoritative
- parents direct the child’s behavior by setting rules + explaining the reason for each rule setting
ex) can watch 1 hr of tv on school night after completing all hw - parents negatively reinforce deviation fr tules
ex) privilege taken away but later reinstated based on new guidelines
passive
parents are uninvolved, indifferent, + emotionally withdrawn
ex) no rules re watching tv as much they want
