Anatomy of the nervous system Flashcards
What are the supporting cells I’m the nervous system, and what are they’re functions
Called neuroglia
Separate and protect neurons and provide framework and support
What is the CNS responsible for
Integrating, processing and coordinating sensory data and motto commands
Responsible for higher functions such as intelligence, memory, learning and emotion
Afferent division of PNS
Brings sensory information to the CNS from receptors in peripheral tissues and organs
efferent division of pns
Carries motor commands from CNS to muscles and glands
What is Grey matter
Consists cell bodies, dendrites and proximal parts of axons of neurons
what is white matter
Contains abundance of myelinated axons which run in tracts carrying signals from one part of the CNS to another
Where is the amount of grey matter the greatest
Cervical and lumbosacral regions, where sensory and motor control of limbs is greatest giving rise to cervical and lumbosacral enlargement of spinal cord
What are the 3 columns that bundles are arranged into
Posterior
Lateral
Anterior
ascending tract vs. descending tract
AT carries sensory information up the cord
DT conduct motor impulses down the cord
12 cranial nerves
Olfactory Optic Oculomotor Trochlear Trigeminal Abducent Facial Vestibulocochlear Glossopharyngael Vagus Accessory Hypoglossal
Dermatome
Skin area supplied by the sensory fibres of a single nerve root
myotome
Group of muscles primarily innervated by the motor fibres of a single nerve root
Somatic division
Innervates musculoskeletal structures and sense organs of the skin
Efferent functions under voluntary control
Autonomic division
Innervates smooth muscles and glands
Maintains, at a constant level, the internal environment of the body
Not under conscious control
sympathetic division
Active during periods of exertion, stress or emergency
