Q

What are the levels of organisation of the human body and describe them

A

Cellular level - the basic unit of all living things except viruses
Tissue level - A group of similar cells working together to perform one or more specific functions
Organ level - two or more tissues working in combination to perform specific tasks
Organ system level - organs interact in organ systems

Q

Epithelial tissue

A
  • Covers the surface of the body
  • Found in the outer layer of skin, lining of body cavities, blood and lymph vessels
  • Some are specialized for secretion
  • Protect the exposed and internal surfaces from abrasion, dehydration, and destruction by chemical or biological agents
  • Can proliferate to produce new cells when cells become damaged

Q

Origin of epithelial tissue

A

Develop from all 3 of the embryonic germ layers

  • Embryonic ectoderms give rise to the epidermis
  • Embryonic mesoderm gives rise to the lining of the heart and blood vessels as well as some of the body organs
  • Embryonic endoderm gives rise to the lining of the respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract

Q

Connective tissue

A
  • Connects all of the epithelial tissue to the rest of the body
  • Most widely distributed tissue type
  • Highly vascular and contain sensory receptors
  • Develop from embryonic mesoderm
