Anatomy of the CVS 1 Flashcards
What is the function of the arteries?
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
What is the function of the veins?
Carry deoxygenated blood towards to heart
What is the function of the capillaries?
Exchange nutrients and site of gas exchange.
What do lymphatics of the CVS do?
Drain excess extracellular fluid from tissues.
Name the two main circulations of the heart.
Pulmonary
Systemic
Describe the pulmonary circulation of the heart
Between the heart and lungs
Describe the systemic circulation of the CVS
Between the heart and the rest of the body
Name to two other less important circulations of the heart.
-Hepatic portal circulation
- Lymphatic system
What is the hepatic portal circulation?
Venous system which returns blood to from the digestive tract to the spleen and the liver.
Which organs does the hepatic artery supply?
Liver
Duodenum
Pancreas
Where does the heart lie?
In the middle mediastinum
What vertebral level is the mediastinum?
T4
Where does the mediastinum lie between?
Right and left pleurae.
Where does the mediastinum extend from and to?
Extends from the sternum at the front to the the vertebral column at the back.
The mediastinum contains all thoracic structures except for?
Lungs and pleura
Where does the aortic arch start and end?
T4
List the different parts of the mediastinum.
Superior mediastinum
Inferior mediastinum (posterior, middle and interior mediatsinum)

Superior vena cava, pulmonary veins, pericardiacophrenic veins.
What is found in the anterior mediastinum?
Fat, ascending aorta, lymph nodes, internal mammary artery and vein, adjacent osseous structures (ribs and sternum), and thymus.
Which structures lie anterior to the heart.
Sternum
Costal cartilages 4-7
Which structures lie posteriorly to the heart?

What are the two types of pericardia?
Serous and fibrous
Describe the fibrous pericardium
Dense connective tissue sac
Describe the serous pericardium.
Has an outer parietal level and inner visceral layer.
What is the epicardium?
Part of the inner vsiceral layer of the serous pericardium.
What is the epicardium?
Part of the inner visceral layer of the serous pericardium.
Covers the heart but not the great vessels.
Where is the pericardial cavity?
Between the parietal and visceral layers
