Anatomy Flashcards
Dentition
The natural teeth in the dental arch
Primary/deciduous dentition
Baby teeth 20 of them A-K
Permanent/succedaneous dentition
Adult teeth 32 of them 1-32 molars not succedaneous
Mixed dentition
Period that takes place between ages 6-12 when there are some permanent and some primary
What age are all primary gone
12
What age is permanent dentition complete
14-15 except 3rd molars completed at 18-25
What stops after puberty has passed
Growth of jaw bone
Maxillary arch
Upper arch dose not move
Mandibular arch
Lower arch movable applies force on maxillary
Occlusion
When teeth of both arches in contact
Sextants
One sixth of dentition 3 in each arch 1-5, 6-11, 12-16 17-21, 22-27, 28-32
Incisors
Single rooted sharp thin edge cut food w/o heavy force shovel shape guides food into mouth
Canines
“Cuspids” corner of arch cutting/tearing longest teeth/roots in mouth last to be lost (cornerstone)
Premolars
“Bicuspids” buccal cusps hold food lingual grinds broad surface
Molar
4 or more cusps chews/grinds 4 or 5 cusps on occlusal surface
Facial/buccal/labial surface
Closest to face
Lingual/palatal surface
Surface of mandibular/maxillary closest to tongue
Masticatory surface
Chewing surface
Incisal/Incisal edge surface
Masticatory surface on anterior teeth
Occlusal surface
Masticatory surface of posterior teeth
Mesial surface
Surface of tooth toward midline
Distal surface
Side pointing away from midline
Proximal surface
Surfaces adjacent to adjacent teeth
Interproximal space
Area between adjacent teeth
Convex
Curved out
Concaved
Caved in
Contact area
Mesial/distal surface that touches adjacent tooth in same arch
Height of contour
Bulge or widest point on surface of crown
Embrasure
A triangular space near gums between proximal surfaces of 2 adjoining teeth (air space where teeth meet)
Line angle
Where 2 surfaces join rounded corner of tooth. (Transfer from mesial to facial side)
Point angle
Where three surfaces meet at a point
Apical third
Near tip of root
Middle third
Second section. Next to apical third (middle)
Cervical third
Nearest to neck of tooth
Occlusocervical division
At the crown crosswise division parallel to occlusal surface contains occlusal middle and cervical third
Mesiodistal division
Lengthwise division with a mesial middle and distal third
Buccolingual division
Lengthwise division labial/buccal lingual division contains facial middle and lingual third
