Charles’ options
- Send an army to wipe the Catholics out of the Palatinate
- Try to persuade Spain to use it’s influence with the Emperor to return the Palatinate to Freddie
- Declare war on Spain. Which would force the Spanish to evacuate the Palatinate and persuade the Emperor to do the same
- Try and persuade France to declare war on Spain and invade the Palatinate
- Accept the loss of the Palatinate. Cut your losses and move on.
Option 1 - send an army to destoy the catholics
Advantage and disadvantage
Advantage - gets to the heart of the issue
Disadvanatge - England would have to hire an army, costly.
Option 2 -
* Try to persuade Spain to use it’s influence with the Emperor to return the Palatinate to Freddie
Advantages and disadvanatges
Advantages:
* Avoids war
* Cheap
Disadvantages:
* It could take a long time
* What could England offer Spain in return
option 3 * Declare war on Spain. Which would force the Spanish to evacuate the Palatinate and persuade the Emperor to do the same
Advantages:
* Popular with the English Protestants
Disadvantages:
* England hasn’t got an army and the navy is in a poor condition
* How would attacking Spain help?
Option 4 –
* Try and persuade France to declare war on Spain and invade the Palatinate
Advantages:
* Gets a major European power on your side
Disadvantages:
* You may be sacrificing the French protestants
Option 5 –
* Accept the loss of the Palatinate. Cut your losses and move on.
Advantages:
* Allows England to reconsider it’s foreign policy
* Cheap
* The King will have less need of Parliament
Disadvantages:
* Loss of honour
* Unpopular with some Protestants
Disputes with parliament over foreign policy
Commons wondered who exactly the enemy was.
They doubted the king’s commitment to the Protestant cause and they wanted firm guarantees about how any war would be conducted.

Reasons for the anglo - french war 1626
Buckingham outmanouvered by Richelieu - the chief minister of france
* he had used english ships to fight a war against french protestants
* had settled seperate peace with spain

buckingham arranged a three pronged attack with dukes of lorraine and savoy who also wanted the removal of the cardinal
the plan was to occupy the rochelle (a french protestant holiding) and then attack
expedition to the rhe 1627
the aim was to secure the rhe, which guarded the approach to le rochelle

Inadequate supplies, such as short ladders and inadequate reinforcements
The effects of foriegn polciy on relations with parliament
parliament unwilling to grant subsidies to see them wasted
this meant that defeat was likely,without the required funding
