reasons for th radical sects
the country had moved away from the anglican and churhc of engaldn church and away from presbyterianims in soctland - had broken into seperatist sects in teh 1640s
justification of the sects
many believed in provinence and teh idea that teh occurence ofthe 1640s were as part of a large divin plan
they saw these events such as the kings execution as a catalyst
millenarianism
believed that jesus would retun with his saints
more improtantly believed that revolutionary change was about to take place in england
problems with millenariaism
caused issues with authority as they velueved the end of the world was near and they were ready to dispense all laws and practises - why bother when the lord was about to sweep it all away
main sects during the revolution
- baptists
- shakers
- ranters
- quakers
- seekers
- congregationalists
- fifth monarchists
- muggletonians
baptists
believed that religion was a matter ofpersonal eperience and not to be taught or learned
they focused on adult baptism (not infants)
deined that chruches should be organised by priests or ministers
they were detested by religious and poltiical concervatives
looked to cromwell to protect them from persecution
general baptists
a denomonation of baptists who werw willing to co-operate with other sects
particular baptists
the denomination of baptists who will not co-iperate with other sects and wish to remian exclusive
ceongregationalists/ independants
those who rejected the national centrally administered chruch
they prefered to congregate and worship the spiriti of the lrod
oliver cromwell was no necessarily and indpeennant because he didnt oppose the church organisation - but jst wanted it to be of freww will and not imposed
5th monarchists
mostly army men and officers
beleived that 5 great monarchies would rule the world in sequence
they believed the death of charles had ushered in the 5th great monarchy - the riegn of king jesus
believed that the governent should be given up to the saints
they failed in the parliament of the saints and caused issues for cormwell throughout the protectorate
muggletonians
believed that god had visted lodowick muggleton in person and had given him the power to save and damn all men
his followes rejected state and church laws that iminged on them
they didnt really make any differences but they were made pinicles by authorities who stated that religious tolration had caused them
seekers and ranters
god manifested himself as a spirtitual foce within the individual
shouldnt seek the divine right in the chruch or the bible but within themselves
often lived in communes with multipke wives and caused uproar in authorities
quakers
by 1660 had 50,000 members
believed -
* the lords message came from within the individual
* only the lord was entited to obedience
* felt that earthly authority such as the state and the chruch undermined the lord
how did the quakers express their beliefs
dsirupted church services
abusing adn shouting at preachers
refusing to pay thithes
an agressive organisation that was willing to use force when threatened
