richard cromwell sucseeded his father as lord protector and commander in chief in 1568
the difference between oliver and richard cromwell
richard didnt have the respect or admiaration that his father did from the army, so had to look to the civilian elements of the government
reasons for the power vacum left by oliver cromwell
he hadnt been able o make any long lasting changed to create a civilian government and had just maintaned the balance between the different groups
the four main polticial groups, inherited by richard
- the army
- the prebyterians
- the radical sectaries
- the republicans
position of the royalists following the end of olivers protectorate
following hsi death, royalists were encouraged the take action again
lack of unity in the army
- some wanted to maintain the protectorate
- some were unhappy with the protector who seemed to have presbyterian sympathies
divisions with the army and richard cromwell
army urged him to give up his position
he refused
was criticised by officials
richard tried to gan support from lenient officials (with some sucsess)
most of the army werent won over
900,000 pounds was still owed to the troops
the protetcorate coudltn pay as they were in two and a half million in debt
reasons that parliament was unco-operative
the republican minority was very vocal and attacked the legitimecy of the protectorate
the army wanted parliament dissolved as they ruled that the council of teh army cshuld only sit with the permission of parliament
richard reistsed but eventually gave in

to reduce the power fo teh army and move towrds a civilian administration

why was the rump recalled
the army attem;ted to make its power less apparent and suggested taht the rump be called back
the end of the protectorate
the rump reasembled in may 1659
richard tried to summmon troups but failed and resigned from public life

- inability to form a government free from army control
- teh strength of the republicans against the protectorate
- the financial situation of the government
